C. S. Lewis would argue that Pride is the opposite of Love, where Pride is defined as self-focus.  That is probably true.  However, love’s natural precursors (familial and tribal instincts) are weak motivators.  Most people never rise beyond instinct to genuine love.  Pride’s natural precursor, though, is fear, and fear is strong.  If Pride is the best word for everything that is not love, then fear is what motivates everything that is not love.  Almost every choice you make and almost everything you do, consciously, subconsciously, or unconsciously, is driven by your fears—fears so deep and so strong that they influence your actions before you ever notice the fears themselves.  Fears so deep and so strong that you shape your entire life to give them wide berth so that you never even have to think about them.

Of course, chief and first among all of these is the fear of death.  In your daily life you never fear death because you shape your entire life so you never have to think about death.  That’s how scary it is to you.  As long as you fear death, that fear will power all the others, and fear will rule your life.  That is the normal state of the human animal: an entire life shaped by moving away from sources of fear, trying at every moment to avoid, postpone, or prevent the one thing that is absolutely inevitable and universal.
